FORMED.ORG has a great series on Baptism. Check it out here.
The Sacrament of Baptism is the doorway to the sanctifying grace of Jesus Christ. The salvation Christ won for us through His Death and Resurrection pass over into His sacraments so that we may participate in His life of grace. Baptism is the first of the sacraments and can be received by anyone who has not yet received it. It does not matter the age because it always comes as a gift from God. Although one's age and circumstances will determine what process is needed to come into the Church.

The process for an adult is different. It is called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. This practice reaches back to the time of the early church, which welcomed people into God's Holy Church through a process over a certain period of time. It is not ceremony for ceremony's sake, but a journeying closer to the Lord and welcoming His gift of salvation in all aspects of life. It is a path of ever greater conversion to the Lord, which is supposed to be the life of everyone who is baptized.
