God's graces flow from our Blessed Lord through His Holy Church. The Lord came to redeem not only our souls but our bodies as well. God does not want us to neglect our bodies, but use them in a holy way through love of God and love of neighbor. Similarly, God desires that we use the material things of this world for His glory and the building up of His Kingdom. Because of this, the Church blesses people, places, and things. Church buildings, altars, and the sacred vessels used at Mass are all of course blessed. But the Church has blessings for people on anniversaries, special family occasions, other buildings, homes, workplaces, vehicles, food, religious items, even pets, and a whole bunch more! These blessings carry the authority of the Church and can help lead us to deeper prayer and holiness. While there are many blessings, here are a few that we celebrate regularly at St. Paul Parish.
Wedding Anniversaries:
Any marriage anniversary is a wonderful gift which shows forth God's love through the love of the couple. For any anniversary please call and let us know so we can list it in our celebratory section. If you would like to have a blessing, Fr. Pfeiffer or Dcn. John would be happy to help. Especially on the 25th, 50th, and 60th anniversaries, please consider having the blessing performed at the celebration of Sunday Mass so that the whole community can be inspired by your love and faithfulness. Please contact us!
House blessings:
House blessings are very much a part of our tradition, especially on or near the Feast of Epiphany (January 6) every year. There are blessing prayers a family can pray themselves at home, which we can provide for you. Or if you would like a priest or a deacon to come and bless your home (especially when you have recently moved to the area), please contact us.
Blessing of Religious Articles:
Rosaries, scapulars, statues, crucifixes, holy cards, and many other religious articles help remind us of the presence of God and His saints. These items help us to pray as well as to be good witnesses to Christ and His Church. How great it is that a blessing can make it even more meaningful, connecting us with the entire Church. While priests and deacons will often bless items after Mass, feel free to call and schedule an appointment so that the blessing can truly lead us deeper in prayer.
